This is my version of I Cannot Tell A Lie from Paul Gilbert's new album "Silence Followed By A Deafening Roar." Sorry about the messy hair! :D

Hey Lyle,

Well done mate! Did you transcribe this yourself? If so, did you memorize entirely or did you write some stuff down? I'm just curious, as not everyone approaches this stuff the same way. I know that you are "super-committed" to guitar, so I won't be shocked if you memorized it all without any (written) notes! I usually write stuff down, then stop looking at it after a few days of repetition!

Again, well done!

I keep meaning to pick up this CD, but I keep putting it off! I heard that he's doing some sort of accompanying instructional DVD, but I don't know if it exists yet?

I learn everything I play by ear. I can read tab but I prefer not to, because when I do it by ear, there's always something a bit different, so I put my own slant on it. BTW, tge DVD is out, that's where I got the backer from, but be careful, some of the copies are dodgy, and don't have the backing tracks.

Cheers Tom! It's actually quite an old guitar. It's a Squier Stagemaster that used to be blue! Dad stripped the paint off and drew that dragon on the headstock (as well as my name). I put a Gotoh Floyd on it too.

Hey Lyle!

Thanks for replying. Like I said, I'm NOT at all surprised that you do it by ear, and you've got the right attitude about it too, because you will take more away from any cover that you play that you transcribe (or memorize) yourself. That's always been my opinion, because you'll associate every lick/chord/arpeggio/melody you learn in a way that means something to you. moving forward.

BTW, great job on your guitar! When I first looked at it, (in your video) I thought it might've been a Washburn N4, (Nuno model) with the natural-body and reverse-headstock, but clearly, the body is different, so that's when I had "no idea" what it was!!!

Cool story about the re-working with your Dad. I love to hear stories about people having great relationships with their parents. Not everyone has that, and being as mature as you seem to be, I'm sure that you value/cherish those experiences with your Dad. You'll always have those memories!

Peace!
