If you guys haven’t heard of Andy James, ya gotta check him out. The guy has some of the cleanest shred technique I’ve ever heard. Awesome stuff!

I cant remember where from, but I heard an earlier version of this. I didn’t think he’d be releasing it because of how similar the intro sounds to “Torn Between Scylla and Charybdis” by Trivium…..and its still just as similar, so that kind of bothers me. Also, i seem to remember hearing it around the time Trivium released their album or around when Andy was working on the Trvium DVD for Lick Library.

Not a blatent rip off of course, just raising a point- this must be his “tip of the cap” to trivium if anything. Either way, top track, top playing from a top guitarist.

    For your consideration in comparison:

    Hi jordp,

You raise a good point here. šŸ˜‰ I’m a fan of Andy James‘ playing, and I’ve taught a few Trivium riffs/solos to a couple of my more “metal” students – LOL šŸ˜Ž However, I didn’t know this specific Trivium song until you linked it to this thread. I must say that I am a bit surprised that Andy would’ve gone down such a similar path? Yes, he uses different notes/key/mode, but rhythmically, it’s damn near identical! (See the following 16th-Note Breakdown, with accents (>) shown below each accented (fretted) note in each riff.) One thing that stands-out to me is the use of consecutive dotted-eighth accent-figures (IE: 3-sixteenths in duration) with a couple of un-dotted eighth accent-figures (2-sixteenths in duration) thrown-in for variety (beat-4 of bar-1 & beat-“+_3” of bar-2):

    ___>_____>_____>______>______>___>______>_____>______>____>_____>______>_____

***This fretted/accented to open-string/un-accented pattern is IDENTICAL in each example that you cited…Good ear BTW!:

As I said, atleast Andy was wise enough to change the scale/harmony used and the rest of the song bears NO resemblance, but the intro…Hmmmm?

hah its a song I learned a while back- so when I heard Andy’s track my ear picked it up immediately. I wish it was just the accents, its how he plays the theme once, with a bass line, then introduces a harmony to the lead and rhythm guitar “chugging” away (on the 2nd repetition) in such a similar fashion. Just saying: people have been taken to court for a lot less!

Wow those intros are very similar. I was willing to chalk it up to a coincidence but now I’m not so sure. I googled “andy james trivium”, and apparently he’s done a chunk of instructional material on how to play Trivium. So he’s obviously familiar with their material and has likely heard and maybe even learned that Trivium song.

That’s pretty surprising. Perhaps it was a “tip of the cap” like Jordan said and Andy will credit them, and maybe he even knows the Trivium guys and asked their permission. Hopefully that’s the case. But if he didn’t run this by them, it could become an issue. He might even want to pull this track off the album (or change the intro) before he releases it to avoid potential legal trouble. Better safe than sorry with stuff like this.
