    Yo guys!

What instructional videos have you been watching to improve your playing during the years?

I have a bunch of these. Old as hell. VHS tapes. The first one I really delved into was Rock Discipline by John Petrucci. 2 hours long and filled with great technique exercises. I can also remember trying to follow a video with Frank Gambale and some half naked chicks trying to build some chops. Hilarious!

I also have Holdsworth, Kotzen, Lynch, Lane, Morse, Henderson, Stern, Scofield, Hall, Friedman, Yngwie, Johnson, Di Meola, Pass, Gilbert, Diorio, Hiland, Benson, Bonamassa, Lee. (now all on youtube I´m sure =) )

I would recommend looking up Scott Henderson if you want to learn cool stuff to play over different chords.

Now which is you favorite wanker? =P

I have some of the ones you mentioned, first they were VHS tapes, I had them transferred to DVD Starlicks and Hotlick’s ect. I started buying DVD’s again about 2011. I would like to mention Lick Library DVD’s the pro and the con. I’m currently watching LL Theory and Harmony series and modes and scales. The downside is there are no tabs included, you have to watch and write it down yourself. It takes some work and attention to detail. That is my main gripe with LL, I guess the pro might be if you have to do some work you may learn it better. I found I was “collecting” DVD’s and not really applying them, so for me I need to just take one at a time and make sure I actually benefit from them and not let them collect dust. My goal is to study 1 to 2 per month untill I catch up.

Hello, I am trying to learn guitar fore the 4th time. I did know a few chords previously, but I’ve forgotten them. What cords do you recommend beginning with? Thank you!

Don’t know if you ever got an answer to this. The question is a little bit like saying, “I want to learn english – which words should I learn.” Memorizing a handful of chords does not make a guitar player. That being said, there are some good “open” chords (chords that essentially make use of the nut or the top of the fretboard to make the chord) that are a good starting point:

    E Maj
    E Min
    E7
    E Min7
    A Maj
    A Maj7
    A7
    A Min
    A Min7
    G Maj
    C Maj
    C Maj7
    D Maj
    D Maj7
    D7
    D Min
    D Min7

These are easily found here: http://guitarchordsguru.com/chord-charts/open-chords/.

Pay close attention to E Maj, Emin, E7, Emin7, A Maj, AMaj7, A7, AMin and AMin7. The reason is that these ‘shapes’ can be moved up and down the neck with your first finger as a barre “essentially acting as the nut” to make a lot more chords.. these would be called barre chords. A little bit of google will fill in the details.

    Good luck~
