This is a given, but I for one can’t play worth squat if my fingers are cold, so room temperature is pretty important. I used to have a portable mini-heater that I’d sometimes use directly on my hands if I was cold. Made a big difference.

Warming up is also key of course. You really have to listen to your body…if your fingers are telling you they aren’t warmed up enough yet, don’t force things, continue warming up until you know you’re at a 100% functioning level.

Stretching exercises of course too (after you’re warmed up).

I’d imagine consistent repetition of warming up and stretching before practicing would eventually get your fingers more limber and less tense.

    Thanks for the advice again!

I get around £50 a week for teaching kids at a local Youth Centre. Try volunteering at a Youth Centre for a while and see if you get a grant. That is how I did it, even though it’s a small start!

    Hey Keelan,

As cliche as it sounds, it’s just going to take more practice. That’s great that you’re practicing with accenting. I think practicing with accenting can be huge in outlining the pulse and keeping your sense of timing in line. Just for varied exercises, I’d also recommend accenting on different 16th note counts.

    For example, instead of:
1 ee and uh 2 ee and uh 3 ee and uh 4 ee and uh

    Try:
1 ee and uh 2 ee and uh 3 ee and uh 4 ee and uh

Also, continue to work on your stamina so your muscles and muscle memory stay sharp and can progress to faster levels. Here’s a super old tutorial I did with some exercises for that: https://www.infiniteguitar.com/guitar-lesson-tutorial.php?tutorial=124

Thanks so much for the response! I’ll get to work.

    Many thanks.

    :).

    Thanks!

I’ve been playing ever since I was 10 or something which I am 21 now… but it was not until 16 that I started practicing seriously. It was all very casual before that.

Yeah, I really liked it. Maybe just put the volume up on the solo slighty so it cuts through better? :).

You’re very good for your age. I’m 19 this year and my picking is still holding me back.

I still need to get into a serious practise routine. I love doing exercises and what not but my biggest weakness is a constant routine. I’m too busy trying to come up with songs and what not.

    How long you been playing?
