    Hey Steve, šŸ™‚

Thanks for this post. I had never heard of Michael Pipoquinha before, but I’m sure we’ll all be hearing about him over the next 8 to 10 years! šŸ˜‰

He seemingly does it all on bass: He’s got the Jaco Pastorius funk finger-playing; He has mad Victor Wooten slap & pop skills; And he’s got the fluidity, spontaneity, and a endless channel of ideas whilst soloing/improvising a la John Patitucci! šŸ˜‰ Holy crap, that’s impressive!!! šŸ˜®

Ya know, the more I think about it, I figure that the fingered-funk and more modern slap & pop styles could’ve been developed/perfected through “crazy amounts of repetition and good guidance/teaching”…However, when you listen-to and watch-him solo/improvise over different harmony and feels/rhythms, it quickly becomes apparent (IMHO) that he’s also got a very special “God-given” gift (as well as the requisite crazy amounts of virtuoso-practicing!) šŸ˜®

He’s such an amazing talent, and look at the pure joy in that smile as he plays. You can tell that he loves to play. That’s awesome! šŸ˜Ž

I agree, Bill. I often think about that when hearing talented young drummers. I understand the ‘chop’ aspect of learning an instrument at a young age– it’s the mental aspect of intelligent phrasing, that simply boggles my mind!
