I know all of you out there play guitar, and use that as a focal point for your compositions… but how about those of you who are into writing lyrics. I’m just basically curious to see if there is anyone else here that enjoys writing lyrics for your tunes as well. If you do, what are some of the themes that you take up within them. Do they tell a story? Is it about a place? a person? an experience?
Also, if you want, you can share some of your lyrics as well.

And to start off, here are some I wrote for my song writing class a few days ago.
This is basically one where I wrote about my experiences with music. It details the feelings, sensations and emotions that flow though me whenever I listen or play the music that I love. It is such an incredible part of my life that if it were not here for me… I probably would not be alive.

Anyways, here ya go. let me know what you think. I’m not very good at writing lyrics, as I dod’t do it very often, but when I do, it’s quite therapeutic.

    Eternal sunshine
    Floods my senses
    Peaceful tranquility
    Reality condenses
    A journey through time
    Or something unknown
    I know where it leads
    But cannot be shown

    Taste the sound
    Feel the colors
    An experiance all my own
    Rivers of gold
    Skys of gray
    Sensations heard but never shown

    Heavenly Descent
    A blessing in disguise
    Come take me away
    Known only thru my eyes
    Sacred palaces
    Of all held dear
    Monumental figures
    So far but always near

    Sing the rain
    Cry the morning
    An experiance all my own
    Hear the dawn
    Speak the night
    Sensations heard, but never shown

    Exuberance unmanned
    An emotional breakdown
    A Technicolor reality
    Trumped only by sound
    A two way mirror
    Some fly…others fall
    I can hear them speaking
    For once they cannot call

    So take my hand
    And lead me away
To a place I know dear

    Where thoughts come alive
    And angels take flight
    Where hope is paramount
    And love’s my guiding light

    A lucid reality
    A place I call home
    An experience always heard
    But one never shown
    A road long winding
    A journey without fear
    A euphoric undertaking
And I’ll always end up here.

Great lyrics man! I love how the words convey so much imagery.

I write lyrics as well. As far as the order of events with songwriting, I usually always write lyrics to music, as opposed to writing music to lyrics. I always have to write the music first before figuring out my lyrical theme and content. I usually write about life experiences, God and his influence in my life, life questions etc. Lyrics take forever for me to write, but I absolutely love doing it. It’s very rewarding when you complete a song where the music as well as the lyrics perfectly convey your message.

These are part 1 and 2 of a project I started long, long ago. I’ve updated a bit in both since then, but I can’t seem to find the files.

And here’s something a bit newer, which I’ve wanted to become the intro-song of a concept-ish album:

From candlelights stem upside-down fountains of smoke
Their rendezvous unveils a dimmed ocean
As the flames set the sky ablaze in red shades
The hazy waters confirm your notion

Now you are sailing the seas of forever
You see horizons waver before your eyes
Dreary in their loom – you hold your terror at bay
    But this voyage is never-ending

First off – Robert – Good stuff and a great topic.

I write lyrics, but the fasion in which I write them varies greatly. Sometimes I write lyrics and can hear a song in my head, other times it’s just poetry that later gets put to music, and other times it comes completely after the music has been written.

My largest lyrical influence is Andrew Schwab. Reading his lyrics I can feel his heart beat as he paints such a vivid imagry without wasting words. I recently bought some of his books of poetry and it’s just mind blowing stuff to me.
