Hi everyone, I’m new around here, signed up a couple of hours ago.
Anyway, I’m 14 years old, I’ve been playing the guitar for around a year now. I’ve been looking at some instructional websites lately, this one looks like one of the best! But I can’t afford signing up for now..

I mainly listen to metal (progressive and experimental) but I also like a little jazz, fusion and the old prog rock bands!

Hopefully I’ll drain the most of the ‘forum-only’ membership šŸ˜‰

    See you
Ariel (or Rel if you want)

    Hi Ariel!

Hey thanks for the compliments on the site. No worries if you can’t get a premium membership. Maybe down the road you’ll be able to. We’re just glad to have you here!

Looks like you started to play guitar at the exact same age I did. Practice hard! Time flies. šŸ˜‰

What are some of the older prog bands you’re into?

    See you around the site,

    Sean

Hey Sean! Nice to meet you. I think I’ve seen you somewhere.. Have you ever taught at GMC.net? I looked up that site too and frmo what I remember, you had some great heavy chops!

Now the progressive bands.. I really like King Crimson and Camel. Yes got some great albums too (Fragile for example). I’ve recently found some of my father’s old records, VINYL CD’s! But we don’t have a gramophone, so we can’t actually play them. Anyway, I found Mike Oldfield there (he’s amazing!), and some Genesis and Emerson Lake & Palmer albums there. They’re good too.

    Welcome Ariel!

I’m sure whatever your looking for as far as understanding more about the guitar, you’ll find it here. I wish I had this type of resource for me when i started, which was about your age as well.

BTW, what kinda jazz/fusion do you listen to? I might as well ask since Sean already asked you about the kinds of Prog bands you listen to. šŸ˜‰
I’m already familiar with the standard greats of jazz/fusion: Dizzie Gillespie, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins, Wes Montgomery, Charlie Parker, Pat Metheny, Chick Corea, Frank Gambale, Brett Garsed, Weather Report, etc. and perhaps you know of some that I don’t that might interest me as well. I must admit, I’m not a big jazz freak like everyone else at college was, and am mainly a thrasher at heart, but if you want to be a good musician, you have to be able to play anything.

Hope to see you around the site, and remember: practice long, practice hard. m/m/

    Hello Rob!
I must say, I’m worse than you, hehe.. I mainly listen to Wes Montgomery, Pat Metheny and Chick Corea. And the band Ephel Duath – they combine experimental jazz progressive metal.. a little weird.

Anyway, I listen to those guys because my friend’s dad told me to try them out, so I did. But I didn’t do it just to tell him “ok I listened”, I was actaully interested. And in my opinion, this is important.

I think that you don’t have to like everything, you just gotta be open-minded for suggestions. It worked for me – I found some great musicians I didn’t know about.

The problem is that when you tell a metalhead to try some jazz, he’ll probably won’t even try that. I think that this is becuase people reach metal after many “music-phases” and for them it is an important point, because metalheads usually have a set opinion about the mainstream music industry and they are usually not so open-minded.

I hope you guys will forgive me for my tendency to get carried away..

Edit: It took me so long to write this message so I didn’t even see Mike’s message! Well thanks Mike, as I said I will try to drain (cool word, isn’t it?) the most out of the free section.

Ya know, your right on alot of levels. Although it’s not that I like everything, it’s that I am willing to expand my musical horizons a bit. I mean, when I got into college, we had to learn jazz. I didn’t like it, but I took it and decided to incorporate the jazz style of guitar playing into my rock playing, like how they did it with classical music. And I think that is one of the downfalls of the department here, is that alot of the people who do go there ARE metalheads like me and they don’t want to learn jazz, and if it’s forced on you, you’ll push away twice as hard, just as I did. And it soon becomes this nice little steel-cage match.

Now that I am in a jazz/funk band with this incredible tenor sax player, I had to learn jazz to be able to adapt and play the style of music that was offered to me and I am starting to enjoy it.

But in all honesty, I would rather listen to cannibal corpse than cannonball adderly.

And I suppose I should now apologize for getting carried away and being so opinionated, cause I’m really not. :p
