Modern prog vs 70s prog

Im not trying to cause a fight here, more really to discuss what the differences are between the two.
I love the fact that the guitar now plays a more dominant role in modern prog but I love the feel of the older 70’s recordings of Yes and Genesis and others, both in terms of musical content and the fact that they were analogue recordings.

What do you reckon?

In some bands and in some way the music has become a lot more about showing off these days. I won’t mention any bands, mainly because I can’t. That’s my general feeling of it. Sure there are a lot of bands that still focuses on getting the feeling and emotion to the listener. Pain of Salvation is a good example of that, while some of the new Dream Theater is a bit “meh”. Hopefully I don’t offend anyone by saying so.

That being said there’s nothing wrong with showing off at times really and especially not if that’s what your band is about. Spastic Ink as an example. I’m pretty sure their main focus is playing some technically very demanding music.

So for it’s very much a question of feeling vs. not so much feeling.

A whole other side of this topic of course is that you can just make it all sound so much more aggressive today. I geuss distortion has been developed in such a manner, that there’s large amount of variety therein. The aggressive side of that can of course help bring certain emotion to the music.

I’ll have to come back and dwell deeper into this when the topic and discussion has really begun 😉

Excellent topic!

To be completely honest, I’m just a full out modern dude when it comes to musical taste. Besides classical music of course, I can’t get enough of classical music.

But yeah I can totally appreciate the 70s prog and I think a lot of it is quality stuff. And I can definitely tap my foot to it if I hear it. But I guess you’d never find me listening to it on my own time.

So I’d definitely have to opt on the side of modern prog, however at the same time, modern prog wouldn’t be here without it’s evolution over time. So props to 70s prog too! 🙂

I love both of them! Progressive music has had a huge influence on me since I started to really listen to music frequently (I’m 18) so for a decend part of my life, maybe 7-8 years.

I like 70s prog way better 🙂 But I’m also a huge Rush fan 😉

ok, I discovered Prog music maybe 4-5 years ago and of course it all started with legendary Dream Theater.

As a big fan of a very wide veriaty of musical types I can only say I love them both very much..

If we talk about DT, no album in the world (for me) can be compared to I&W or SFAM…
true pure prog music.
although some of thier fans consider albums as TOT to be less “progish”, I disagree cause I connect to this “kind of prog” as well…
so i can’t rly say if someone bits the other..

now, I really enjoy some of the modern prog groups as POS or Circus Maximus, but I think nothing bits
the basics..
(I think most of modern groups are influenced very much by old bands as rush, pink floyd, DT, genesis. yes, maybe even jethro and crimson as well… so the music is kinda like the old groups style.. so y not listening to the source himself? =])

The two now are very different Indeed, but i love them both just the same, I am way more partial to modern. I dont think there showing off really, Band like Nevermore and Evergrey for example, have got that power and emotion, the passion and desire burnt into all there songs that really makes you connect with them, Especially Evergrey, beautiful music from them. Dream Theater i love as well, i think the new album is fantastic, and i love all there stuff.
