    Hey guys,
Just had to post this clip. Allen Hinds is so underrated its scary. Just check out his tone here. I think he is using an Xotic AC Plus pedal and possibly his trusty
Fender Deluxe Reverb amp….what a touch

Just wanted to copy/paste a couple of e-mail replies that Mr.Hinds himself sent me over the last 3days. The 1st question was about his tone on the “Fact Of The Matter”(there is a track on that record called “Hmph” that will haunt me till the day I die!!) CD and the second question was about his tone EQ-ing for the YouTube clip above that I’ve attached:

    “hey Ajay, Allen Hinds here..
i did most of that c.d. with an early 70s Deluxe reverb amp with a Fane 100 watt alnico speaker in it… I use the AC boost by Xotic..for overdrive…thats pretty much it……dont use any fancy mic techniques.. just move a 57 around till it sounds good….
    thanks
    allen

“well thats a Tom holmes pickup on that guitar.. and usually with no distortion on the guitar,I adjust the EQ so that even with the humbucker on its not too trebly…usually i just dial back the treble to about 4 or so…bass around 7 or so…and then with the AC on, i adjust it Gain around 1 oclock, treble around 11 oclock, bass at 12 o clock and volume around 9 oclock…
    hope that helps
    allen”

    Hi guys,

I have an Allen Hinds instructional DVD. He is a truly tasteful player with a smooth legato and great tone. How many of us would like to win the lottery so as to attend Musicians’ Institute anyway?…lol If only…

    Hi Frank,
I am seriously thinking of ordering atleast one of those DVDs!! Do you have
The Next Step or Beyond The Guitar? They are 3 and 4disc sets respectively costing $97 and $89? Which disc do you have and does he do an in-depth tutorial on his legato technique because that is what I am specifically interested in…

    Hi legatofix,

I have the Next Step DVD. I find that Allen is very hard to follow at times and there is no booklet or tab to accompany his tutorials. I even wrote to the distributing company for some tab on his material and got no response.
That being said, if I were to go over the DVD a few times, I would pick up more of the material. I wish it was more organized though.

Those DVD*s (beyond the guitar)have some great material too them. However, having a close friend of mine attending MIT and taking private lessons from Allen outside school (as well as in class), he has told me that Allen himself does not want people buying those DVD’s at all. This since the guys that shoot them pretty much stiffed him for the money, and it didn’t turn out as well as he would have liked either. So Allen does not wish people to support this guy by buying the DVD’s. This from the horse’s mouth so to say. So as for me, I might *hrrm* “find” a digital copy floating around the net of this, but I would not go as far as to buy the stuff, out of respect for Allen’s wishes.

Of course, those of you really interested in his stuff, should shoot him an email asking about these DVD’s and alternatives to them, if he is still refraining people form buying them.
