Back to modes one more time. I teach in France and the structure in schools and consevatories is pretty conservative – loads of sight reading BEFORE playing the instrument, etc. So this guy comes to see me for a private lesson an,d asks me about Major scales and their chord prgoressions and then what notes fit the best and where. So I start him off on modes (or Moods as I consider it). I noticed that Modes TEND (not all the time) to stand out best when there are few chords in the background – space matters – , i.e. I agree with Mike. So i played the old CMaj7- dmin7 and the student got it immediately (even though there are various modal possibilities). The snag is, he got badmouthed at the Conservatory – they said he was too dissonant !!!. ?????

Hello Solos. Maybe you’re right to just let the music speak for itself… Used to play with a guy called Thanopoulos ( a real ace on the sirtaki). Last I heard he was in Antiparros ??

Hi ! Why don’t you try Guitar Pro for the drum tracks and then convert the whole thing into a WAV file ? I use it a lot just to hear how a song might possibly sound. Otherwise you’ve Garage band with drum loops or Logic Pro (real expensive, real pro and real complicated). STRINGLESS.

Hi Straken ! The tricky thing with tabs is : – 1. Are they correct ? 2. No rhythm indications 3. Half the time no key indications !
I listened to a short piece of the song, and to my mind the tonal centre is round C#min (therefore you’ll have to think in terms of A Major). I have the feeling that these guys have tweaked their tuning a bit (Drop D ?). My way of figuring things out is to really listen to the bass and learn the sung melody and THEN work out the chords and their extensions.

Hi DarrenC from Seattle. I understand the physical bit – I had to change picking hands after severing two tendons on my left hand – so I switched to playing southpaw – Real drag ! I knew what to play in my head but it was all upside down and my hands would not simply do what I wanted. The result is that my picking hand is smaller and much weaker than my fretting hand. Still, I stuck at it and I’m slowly getting up to snail speed. The point is – what do you want to play and learn ? For me, I sing and play mostly rhythm guitar in a four piece band – all our own stuff. The reason I’m signed up here is to ge the best advice and tips I can from the ace players. I really like the tutorials on rhythmic displacement and new ways of looking at playing the guitar. I live in France which is more or less a musical desert, so the guys here are real refreshing – I REALLy like the ‘djent’ and ‘metal’ lessons even if I can’t see myself singing over that sort of background – I want to keep my tonsils. But what do you like playing ? That’s the main thing. To my mind the 10$ is well worth it, so welcome aboard. PhilC (STRINGLESS).

Hi Solos Great stuff ! In my opinion (which is worth what ?) I would add some lyrics to offset and compliment that haunting backline melody. What are you tuned to ? PhilC (French Alps)

Thanks a lot – so the initial pull-off gives a kind of appoggiatura effect ?

Hi from the French Alps. Its real cold here. I have a question for Sean Conklin about that marvellous pedal point legato study (Exercise One) he posted. Maybe I’m dumb, but I don’t get why or how the pull-offs work. I can just about play the etude following Guitar Pro at about 90 bpm. I understand the hammer-ons,but the pull-offs ? If I play the passage with regular straight A notes in the bass it sounds sort of dull, but I don’t figure out the use of the pull-offs.
