I’m not stranger to them myself, as I have tight hamstrings by nature (a lot of big dudes do, apparently). I pulled my left one back in february playing rugby and repulled it playing softball with my company since I didn’t adequately warm up and tried to shift into 6th cold. Last week I stretched the life out of my left hamstring, so this time I pulled the right one (yes I’ve been sedentary since the initial pull). Both times previously, no swelling, no bruising. This time, tons of swelling and bruising which makes it hurt more thanks to the throbbing and it’s difficult to elevate. Anyone have any tips or tricks for minimizing these injuries, namely getting the swelling to go down, this is ridiculous. From the break of my boxer shorts down to the top of my calf all over the back side of leg is deep purple. It’s pretty nasty, so no pics on this one.

Wow man, I’m sorry to hear about that. That’s horrible. Especially with how much you’re stretching, the frequency of the injury seems pretty unusual. My first word of advice would’ve been to stretch your hamstrings everyday, whether you’re doing strenuous activity or not. But it sounds like you might be doing that already. Have you seen a doc or physical therapist for this? Or maybe tried a brace of some sort?

Hope the injuries stop for you man! šŸ™‚

well the original injury was sustained while it was 30 degrees outside and we had just had a water break and a lengthy explanation of the drill we were about to do so my legs tightened up in the cold (if you’ve not seen rugby shorts, imagine boxer shorts on steroids). So that was unfortunate, then I rushed it and didn’t stretch at all in the month I was out. I did stretch the second time and my left one felt great, but my right one ended up a casualty. I’ve started stretching every day. The girlfriend insists i start doing yoga with her a couple days a week, but that’s likely not going to happen.

not sure on needing yoga, but I’d definately suggest stretching good everyday. You seem like an active guy so you’re probably also smart enough to be stretching the entire leg, not just the hamstring, but I’d advise that if you aren’t already.

I’d definately talk to a physical therapist about what type of joint braces you can get for your issues.

I know this isn’t nearly as “cool” but arm injuries are quite common in one of my favorite sports I compete in – bowling. Put a 15 pound ball in your hands, tell your hand to hold it with just two finger tips, don’t let the wegith drop, keep the hand behind the weight, and then get the ball to spin at 800 rpm… not easy.

This sport puts lots of stress on your forearm and shoulder and injuries are common. Depending on your style it also puts lots of pressure on the knees and hips but those injuries are low in younger adults.

But my point is that I’ve had my fair share of injuried and it’s amazing how much a forearm brace like this helps:

That’s identical to the brace I’ve used and it’s amazing what night and day of a different it can make.

So maybe seeking some professional advice might be in order. Beats yoga…
