    Hey i have riffs and lyrics for a song i made up… How do i record it? Add drums and bass to it? And copyright it? any suggestions would be appreciated..

    If your looking for software to add the drums and bass.

    Band in a box is quite good. All you do is punch in the chords and pick a style and it will create a backing for you.

    Finale 2008 or an earlier version, is a good notation tool if you want to write each part yourself. There are also sample packs such as ‘Garry Garritan Instruments’ which will turn the midi tracks into high quality ‘realistic’ sounding instruments.

    There are many others but these are the ones I use.

    Recording instruments with your PC will require some kind of interface like a ‘Guitar Port’ which will connect to your PC with a usb cable usually.

    Then you want some Recording Software like Cubase/Protools or Adobe Audition (which I found to be the easiest to learn) also you want to make sure your PC is up to date and able to handle audio editing software.

    Copyright will require you first become a member of an organisation such as APRA. You should get all the details here http://www.amcos.com.au/ .

    I just got cool edit pro 2.0, but im completely lost on this stuff… Its hard enough to learn to play guitar, without all this other stuff i gotta learn now… But i have some sweet sounding riffs and cool lyrics written down, no solo though..

    Is there anyway i can go from my amp to my computer? I have a direct out/headphones port on my amp… That way i can have the same sound recording that i have outta my amp.

    Yes you can do that.

    One way would be to get a lead that will go from your headphones out > ‘mic in’ on the sound card. Odds are you will need to get a special lead for this, since the headphones out is usually a 1/4 inch plug and ‘mic in’ is 3mm. You can just get a normal guitar lead for this, and get a 3mm adapter for one end, most electrical stores will sell these.

    However this method can be risky, if the power coming out of your amp is too much for the sound card you may destroy the ‘mic in’ plug on the sound card. I know from experience šŸ™‚

    The safer method is to buy some kind of small mixer or better yet an interface like the Guitar Port which is quite a common one for what your interested in. A couple of the instructors here use the Guitar Port for recording lessons.

    I actually use an ‘ART Tube MP Project Series’. This one is simmilar to the Guitar Port but it has no effects in it. I plug my amp into it then it carries the sound through a USB cable to the PC.

    So yea, If you can affor it go for an interface like i mentioned. If you ask at your local music store they should be able to give you some good advice and show you exactly how it all works.

    In the future hopefully we can get some lessons on how these devices work.

    Hi mate…Line6 are a great company for making lots of great products to cover different needs. The PODxt and now the PODx3 are both amazing items BUT you could buy a Toneport which is both a soundcard and a guitar tone generator which gives you a great way to get your playing into the PC. I used Cakewalk 9.0 for years because it was cheap and easy and did a great job…I still use it today and I reckon you could be hooked up with it for less than a fiver! The Toneport is a cheap BUT pro option and easy to use. Hope this helps.
