That’s right, Guitar Idol has just launched and the final swill be held at the London Guitar Show in June.
Ten finalists will be put through, based on internet votes only (members only can vote).
So what we have here is an interesting dilemma. Will the guys that plays the best go through, or will the guys with the most buddies win? Make sure to throw down your vote on who you like best!
And yeah, I’m the running as well, and if you like what you hear, give me some of your vote sugar šŸ˜‰

Well as with the ‘American’ ‘Australian’ ect.. Idol shows. It’s usually less to do with talent and skill, and more to do with which one is better looking. Or who ever happens to cover the latest ‘hip’ top 10 song. Having said that, you will be a shoe in if there are any lady voters :p

Musical ‘skill/greatness/talent’ in any form is totally subjective and there is no way to get a consistent response. Unless the Judges are selected and confined to a certain criteria when giving points.

This is part of the reason I enjoy ‘ So you think you can Dance ‘. But we wont go there šŸ˜‰

    Great entry by the way!
I will register and vote accordingly šŸ™‚

    Hey Bro,

You’ve got my vote. Don’t have to tell you how good your entry is as it speaks for itself. Just don’t go getting more votes than me :p

I think Richard’s entry is WAAAAAY above Chris Feener’s one – both musically and composition-wise.
Way to go Richard! Good luck man!

EDIT:Funny thing is – they both have that part where they stop playing and let some other instrument kick in for a while šŸ˜€ As if they were arranging it in the same room hahahaha

Best of luck guys šŸ™‚ its a cool idea šŸ™‚

I tried entering like a million times but somehow it never went thru. Damn this internet. A curse on it!

Not like I would have stood a chance against Rick or Richard anyways. They could wipe the floor with me. šŸ˜‰

(BTW…if your curious as to what I would have entered, it is the improvisation that is in my profile)

There’s some great playing going on there!

Richard – your clip is awesome – great sound and playing!

I should enter and show you all how it’s done – NOT!

I am quite fascinated by some of the entries. On a sidenote, Richard, I really like your Super Continental. Very fun song to (try to) play. As far as this competition goes I will have to listen again tomorrow. I have always had a weak spot for some of Chris Feener’s compositions, but this one really isn’t his best, in my opinion.

Thanks for the suppport guys šŸ™‚
    Appreciate it!

Caelumamittendum: Thanks for checking out my Super Continental tutorial.
The tricky part about that song is really timing. Once you’ve got that down,
you’ll be soaring through it šŸ™‚ A long tutorial on timing and note value alteration is on the way =)

Can I just add to some comments earlier, as the main organiser of Guitar Idol.

The online vote is PRIMARILY for a Public Vote Award: the 10 finalists will be selected by a panel including top instructors/guitarists from Guitar Institute (Martin Goulding, Tolis, Pete Whittard etc) Edward Box, Andy James, Rory Sullivan, James Edwards, Nick Andrew, myself and others from Alloutguitar.com, Phil Hilborne (UK Legend and founder of Guitar Techniques mag), Stuart Bull from Licklibray.com, David Greaves Editor Guitar Buyer mag, Lasse and Andy Craven from Lion Records + several others.

We will all select 10 top players individually from the entrants and then thrash it out: yes, someone like Feener will of course be a prime consideration because he has networked it so well: but equally if a new Greg Howe or Guthrie etc came in on the last day they would stand just as much chance with 0 votes!

The 10 finalists then have to prove themselves on stage infront of 1000’s of fans on June 13th – and a panel that will have an number of world renowned guitarists and industry figures.

Having millions of net mates will not help: talent will.

Please, all of you consider entering – and let’s make this a great event!

    Cheers

    Owen

    Hey Owen!

I think it’s much fairer like that. I mean there are some fantastic entries there with not that many votes and it would be a shame to not see those guys get through to the finals because of lack of votes. I’m not saying I stand a chance of getting through to the finals but I would stand absolutely no chance if it were to be based on votes.

Great competition with some great prizes and prospects not just for the winner but I guess all the finalists too.

    Get your entries in guys!

Richard – Sounds great. I like what you submitted and I’ll be watching with high anticipation.

I had the honor of attending Guitar Player Magazine’s Guitar Hero competition in 06′ as a VIP guest of Anton. Anton was from Russia and didn’t know anyone in the area, so he offered 2 tickets to anyone on the message board I met him on to see if anyone was from the area. I spoke up for the tickets immediately and took my guitar teacher. What an awesome night.

There was some amazing talent, but it wasn’t shredability that won. It wasn’t technique. It wasn’t style, it wasn’t tone, it was everything combined and a balance of all. Trey Alexander won and here’s the performance. You can see me on the left side of the screen up front wearing a hat… that’s a guitargearheads hat btw šŸ˜‰ You’ll also here me yell a couple times.

    http://youtube.com/watch?v=3MYNjlsGEPg

Trey had an amazing groove that was phat. He had a melody that I STILL find myself singing at least once a week or so, and he could really shred as well. His tone was one of the better in the group, my favorite being David Powers.

One of the things that kept comming up time and time again by the judges was tone, and I don’t blame them. There’s a lot of kids on youtube nowdays that can really play, and play well… but their tone is so scratchy and annoying you wouldn’t want to listen to them for more than 10 minutes, if even that long. This day in age tone is a huge part of a guitarist ability. The player needs to understand not just what notes people what to hear, but how to play them with dynamics, and with the right tonality.

One of the most interesting entries into the competition was acoustic player Patrick Woods and 15 year old Joshua. I loved joshua for one reason.. he looked like malmsteen but sounded like he purposefully tried not to sound like him. Given some time he could develop into quite the guitar god.

I wish you well Richard. You’re far better than me, but I think you should be able to make top 10 with relative ease. You’ve got the skillset to go all the way I think.
