since I’m planning to buy this guitar in the near future, I was just wondering if anyone has some
    experience with this guitar?

I would highly aprecciate if someone would point out all the cons and pros.
I’m kind of an ”all-around” guitar player, and I need a good piece of instrument to satisy my blues as well as my heavy metal needs.

here’s the official web site link for the guitar

    Beautiful guitar.

I haven’t played that particular model, so I can’t speak from first-hand experience. However I’m sure it would adapt to your varying styles very well. Ibanez rules!

Cant say I have any experience with this axe.

I found some reviews on Harmony Central that you may find usefull though.

I’ve played quite a few S series ibanez guitars, that one included. Very comfortable guitar to play.Very easy to play. Good tone variety.

But it just never spoke to me. I don’t really have anything bad to say about the S series but for some reason they just never grabbed my attention while other ibanez lines make me drool on command.

The JS2000 is the same way. Nice guitar, just doesn’t suit me.

I find it really hard to find pickups that do everything I want though, and I’ve been through my fair share. But I’m pretty picky. It’s hard to get great screaming metal + chunky rhythm + round jazz tone all from one pickup. My iommi gibson pickups came close, but I’ve changed the bridge out because it just wasn’t enough for my metal taste. But the neck pickup still does everything I need and more, it’s an amazing workhorse for me.

It’s interesting that you should say that Gollum.

I’m not nit picking here. But the three sounds you described would actually be drawn from different pickup ‘selections’. Well that’s how I see it anyway. That nice bright distortion will always start with the bridge pickup, where as the middle selection is often good for rhythm playing. The neck being left for those wide warm lead tones.

Pickups for me have never been a real focus point fortunately. I have some friends who buy new pickups almost every 6 months because they are constantly in persuit of that awesome tone.

I would be lucky to buy a new PICK every 6 months. If I have problems with my tone, usually its cheaper to just change the angle of my pick…. or fiddle with the tone knob :p

Maybe If I had some extra cash I would have a different stance though šŸ™‚

Trust me, I LOVE my pickup selector and make FULL use of it.

In a 1 hour worship set I probably change my selection at least 30+ times on a regular basis.

I’ve changed pickups enough times to understand that much of the reason the S series ibanez guitars don’t speak to me is likely in the pickups, or the basic resonence of the body, and the tone it thus creates. It plays fine, but the sound doesn’t make me want to play it for ever and ever.

Pickups don’t make your guitar inherently warm or bright, they simply bring out different aspects of a guitars natural tones it’s creating. The problem is that no pickup is going to give you a perfectly clear “view” if your guitar’s tone. Some will be brighter, and others warmer. Some will have heavy mids bringing out the vocal content of the guitar, while others will have a heavy treble/bass with a softer mid.

The tony iommi signature SG has the same exact pickups in the bridge and neck, as it’s well suited to both. I had this same exact setup on my ibanez GAX for over a year, and had it nearly 2 years on my samick. 1st off, it’s amazing how different they sounded between the GAX and Samick, even though they both were nearly identical electronic setups. The GAX just doesn’t have enough body to bring out the warmth of these pickups, and the samick is so warm that you begin to realize how lacking they are in the mids and highs. The bass overpowers the mids and highs in most scenarios, and when you roll off the tone knob you get that huge warm jazz tone with ease.

…which I love. But when you’re trying to get screamin’ leads out of the bridge it just isn’t there.

I’m now running a Duncan JB SH-4 in my bridge position which is AMAZING. But unfortunately the cleans are a bit harsh and never warm. Unfortunately it’s much easier to CUT frequencies than ADD, which is why guitar electronics REMOVE high frequencies with the tone knob, so when I roll off my tone on the new pickup it most just starts to sound small, not warm. It’s like the difference of turning all your EQ on your amp down 3 hours. It’s still “flat” but lower and it’s noticable thinner in texture. Same applies here, rolling the tone knob doesn’t “fix” the tone for these pickups.

So for most of my cleans I still rely on using both pickups, or just the neck. Before I could get great cleans with either position.

And after saying ALLLLL that… I’ve found most stock ibanez pickups to be severly lacking. The only ones that ever seem decent are ones with other company names on them.

I have an S470 QS which was the forebear to the DXQM. The stock pickups are garbage. I put DiMarzio Evolutions in it and they are fantastic for metal. They’re a little hotter than what you’d want to necessarily be used for something like Jazz.

My ear isn’t as refined as Gollums, but for the moment they sound good to me. I wouldn’t pay $650 new for one of these, I got mine used w/ case for $305 off of ebay. That’s a great price on it. New pickups are a must. The ZR tremolo is great for dives, not so much flutter though.
