    Hey guys!

I’m kind of a n00b in this question so let me ask you one thing: does a widescreen shooting 16:9 captures a wider area or is it just a different square size?

For example i have my camera placed at 1 spot, and it “sees” 5 frets of my guitar when in 4:3 mode. Than i swap it to 16:9 – should i see more frets because it is a “widescreen” aspect ratio or should i still see 5 frets but have smaller height?

Any explanation is good because i don’t have an explanation myself! šŸ˜€ šŸ˜€
I’m trying to find pros of widescreen so it would really help if somebody could explain the REAL use of 16:9 šŸ™‚

    Thanks and rock on!

    Hey Pavel,

The answer is that you should definitely have a wider view when in widescreen mode. So with your example, you would see more frets. When your camera switches from 4:3 to 16:9, the lense adjusts to a wider viewing, assuming your camera has widescreen mode. Most cameras do. So yeah if you’re after a wider viewing, can’t go wrong with widescreen.

Ok, strange – i tried switching modes and didn’t get any wider range…maybe my cam is does not have REAL widescreen mode ’cause i got the same width but a reduced height.

I was just interested in the pros of widescreen. I guess i’ll stick to 4:3 ratio until i get an HD monster šŸ˜‰

    Thanks for reply man!

Hmmm that’s weird. Did you try filming in both modes or did you just try looking at the LCD monitor without filming. Maybe the wider image wouldn’t appear on the LCD but it would when you film it? If that doesn’t work, then yeah I guess your cam’s “widescreen” isn’t really widescreen. Technically it would be “widescreen” since the ratio is 16:9, but comparitively speaking it wouldn’t be widescreen since it doesn’t get wider than the 4:3 ratio.

But yeah, I’m sure once you get a HD monster down the road you won’t have that issue. šŸ™‚

Hey Sean! Yeah i filmed and compared on computer. So i guess – widescreen comes with HD hahahaha

I get widescreen with my Panasonic DV camera.
However, I was wondering. Sean, if I shoot with widescreen from now on,
will the player window automatically convert to widescreen?
And, when converting in flv, is there even a widescreen option?
What I mean is, when looking at your vids, the player is in 4:3, but your vid is in widescreen.

Yeah even though my videos are in widescreen, the actual video footage is 4:3, with those black bars being part of the video. You probably wouldn’t have to do anything different if you started shooting in widescreen. Best thing to do though would be to do a short test video in widescreen, render it, then convert to FLV to see the final result. But yeah I don’t think you’d have to do anything differently.
