Writer’s Block…

Alright – this is driving me nuts.

For the past 12-13 months I haven’t written any music at all. Well, I have, but after listening to it 4 times I don’t like it anymore. It’s usually only like 4 beats of music and then…BANG, I don’t like it anymore.
Before all this I have written tons of stuff (literally) – e.g. one full album that I was originally planning to record, but now I want to re-write all the music, because I think some of it isn’t as good as it could be. Anyways:

Does anyone have any serious, and easy-to-do, advice on this?

Sendspace is known for its short-term services. Why can’t you upload the same way you did with Lex Naturae? (I mean, thourgh the forum upload system).

Good to hear you’re overcoming this!
By the way, November is amazing!
The rest of the months (hehe) are great too, but this one stands out in my opinion.

I’m not so sure I’m overcoming this. In terms of playing guitar, improvising and such, it’s all great. But when it comes to composing music I’m stuck in a rut again.

I’m afraid I don’t even have that GP file which I uploaded earlier on, but if I find it I’ll upload it again.

Well, at least you’re on the right path. I think you shouldn’t push yourself, those nice riffs and melodies will eventually come. When you try to compose forcefully, without really having something in your head, the composition will probably not be so good (not true in ALL cases, but from what I’ve seen it is true in most of them).

As I told you, I checked out your songs, they are great, but some of them are a little complicated. So now, after not writing any good material for a long time, start again with simple stuff. By simple I don’t mean 2-3 chords repeated throughout the song, of course. But I also don’t mean 15 minutes creation with 27/16 time signatures and all possible keys (unless you can do that and it sounds good to you :P). Start out with a short chord progression, and then try to develop it.

    Good luck!

Sure enough, thanks for the advice, man!

I don’t really feel that I don’t have anything to “write about”, as my main priority for the past 1½ (you’ll probably see a connection now), has been to re-write Lex Naturae, because I’m not satisfied with the old compositions. However, I want to do this as whole heartedly as possible, and I want to be completely satisfied with the songs – I want the compositions to be the best I’ve ever written. However, I constantly find myself thinking: “This is not good enough for Lex Naturae”. …

    Well, well… 😛

Yeah, this is a big problem. I kinda know the feeling that a song you made doesnt meet your requirements (and we all new musicians are perfectionist.. our requirements are very very high). But like someone said here, the more exprienced you are, the better your songs are. So trying to re-write something doesn’t really get you anywhere. Well, it does, but not as much as writing a new composition. It isn’t easy at all, I know that but writing new songs will inspire you and it might give you new ideas that you can apply to Lex Naturae.

True enough. I may just hook up the half stack and plug in my guitar now. Usually I’m just playing through the pedalboard into the computer, because it’s easier for recording. But I guess the primer gives better flow for new ideas.

Something I have found to be quite fullfilling is to write new melodies for old tunes. Also, write it as though you were aiming for the main stream. So simple, catchy melodies. Stuff you can easily sing.

Its a great way to get the creative juices flowing without the ‘pressure’ of creating an epic original masterpiece.
