    Hello everybody,

I am sure some of you may have seen this going on, or know someone who’s account has been closed. Well another one of my friends account has been closed. It seems to be happening more and more. From what i understand, they give you a notice to take the video/videos down, then if you don’t they will close your account. Some others find their videos just being pulled. This is all because of the copyright infringement. So know a few of you on here have lots of covers, do you plan on keeping them up until they make you take them off, or close your account?? I have a few covers and instead of waiting for them to close my account i think it’s best just to pull them, instead of starting over.

This really bites, because IMO like many others, all we are doing is HELPING sell albums. If it weren’t for some people i know doing covers i would have NEVER heard of the songs or bands. But i guess when it’s all said and done and they find sales down or that the artist isn’t getting as much attention, then maybe they will realize how much we actually helped them.
What’s next? Not playing covers in a live situation. I see no difference.

This is the first I’ve heard of this. Do you know of any official press releases/links that would explain what you’re talking about? I don’t know of any copyright infringement that takes place by simply playing a cover and uploading a free video of it.

I’ve heard a lot about it as well. My understanding is that the artists’ “original” basically the song they recorded and put out for sale cannot be used in the cover. Backing tracks etc.. are fine I believe. At least that was my interpretation. These are the two links from where I was reading about it. Thank god for google:D

From what i understand, you can use random backing tracks, but you can’t use any which have been professionally record. That means no naked tracks, of any kind. I am sure you all know Cesar Huesca?
He was the first person i ever heard youtube closed his account. Now several other people have had their accounts closed.

You are suppose to be notified to remove the video or your account will be closed. All this is from big record company’s. Cesar said steve vai didn’t have a problem with him doing his covers, vai had him on his favs. But vai had nothing to do with it. I suggest you all search for this on youtube, you will be surprised how many people had their accounts closed. Again unless you all find something out that i don’t know, random backing tracks are fine as of now. But any naked tracks or covers you have done could possibly have to be removed.

Here is a link, basically it has to do with WMG. So anyone on their record labels will be removed.

To see the entire list of labels click on this link:

To see the entire list of artists click on this link:

Again naked tracks from any of these bands or labels will be removed…..eventually.

What do you mean by “naked track” and by “random backing track” ?

First i would like to say i am not 100% sure about what’s acceptable and what’s not. What i found out by a partner of youtube is don’t use anything you didn’t create. Simple enough.

Naked tracks are backings that have been recorded by the original artist, but without any of their playing so you can play along. Such as Steve vai, Joe satriani etc.

Random backings are what most of us use to improv over, such as ….funk jam, 80’s backing, Guitarcenter, etc.

Thats well put. My point of asking was to bring to light the terms/words people (read lawyers) will use to get at whatever they want. I think – “backing track”, they think – “stealing”. šŸ˜€ Who knows!

I was a subsriber of Cesar Huesca, and its very scary that his YouTube account was closed. But I’m sure there’s more to it than what appears. Maybe another video site to overtake Google? The Internet does offer us the freedom to choose where we get out stuff from, so YouTube does not really matter for the musicians out there.

Anyway, copyright is a serious issue which I hope I never understand!

    Thanks

Yeah i was also a subscriber of Cesar and didn’t know what happened to him for awhile, until i read about it on the vai forum. Shame it has come to this, but greed is the root of all evil. Never satisfied, always wanting MORE MORE!

Copyright is a serious issue, but i feel if your using a backing track and your playing, who’s it hurting?
Most people put the artist and song title on their video anyway. And for those who don’t know the band/song ask, so it’s not like anyone is claiming it is their own material. So the artist is still getting recognition.

Oh well, not my problem, it’s not like i made any money so i take down a few videos, still not hurting me. Now i will just put up more improv videos šŸ˜‰

If I was an artist, I’d feel honoured if someone wanted to play my stuff.
This is truly a punch in a fan’s face.

    rolex,

Would you like to explain the relevance of these links here at IG? šŸ˜® Furthermore, why are these non-sensical links replies to a thread regarding closed YouTube accounts? šŸ˜”

Ya know what…Forget what I think. I’ll just ask IG-founder Sean Conklin what he thinks of your completely unrelated links! šŸ˜‰

^ Hey Bill, you were right with your first reply. šŸ™‚ Advertising isn’t allowed and he was obviously just a spam troll. The posts were deleted and the user was banned.

Thanks for the heads up guys!

    Hey Sean, šŸ™‚

OK, so my instincts were right! šŸ˜” I was gonna P.M. you regarding that B.S., but then I thought I might’ve overreacted, and also I couldn’t afford to be late for my students’ lessons earlier this afternoon! šŸ˜® šŸ˜‰

In retrospect, I guess I have no problem “flexing-some-muscle” in “IG-self-defense!” (LOL!) šŸ˜Ž

I am not positive about this but I believe that if you title your song as “In The Style of (Artist Name Here). Then you stand the chance that their search bots will not tag your video for review. Also trying to change the spelling a little bit Like Steve Rae instead of Stevie Ray. I am in no way suggesting trying to rip people off or steal their material for your own profit. But I believe a cover of a song will only help bring more people to the original artist in search of more of the type of music they have just listened to. I have discovered and re discovered artist and bought some of their music because of a good cover.
