+1 for the above book by Mark Levine. I’m taking a jazz improvisation course in school right now and it is a great resource. But like others have said, learning standard notation is pretty much step #1 in jazz these days, but I guarantee that learning it will open up a whole other world of possibilities in your playing.

Man, I really tried to think of something constructively critical to say, but I couldn’t find one. I thought the whole thing sounded great – nice phrasing, rhythm variations, and knowledge of the backing to help your solo match the harmony. Good job dude

Hey Opeth, I’m no amazing improviser but one thing that has really helped me is to take a lick or phrase that you already know and play it. After the last note, try to continue the lick in the same style (or not, if that sounds better to you). But basically this teaches you to play off of ideas and continue them on the fly. Try it out

Thanks for the link Frank, couldn’t quite narrow it down from that however. I’m thinking of taking it to a tech guy, but if someone here knows a simpler solution or has solved a similar problem lemme know.

The first songs I ever learned to play on acoustic were…

    Oasis – Wonderwall
Eagle Eye Cherry – Save Tonight
    Tom Petty – Freefallin’

These were just the ones my counselors at summer sleep away camp taught me, but man oh man did the ladies love em. Then again, I was about 12 or so, but I’ve pulled them out now and again and they still seem to work haha. People gather around you and join in on the singing. Tote around a djembe or similar drum for extra points.

Oh prog metal, so many good ones. Here’s some you may or may not have heard of…

Spastic Ink – Ron Jarzombek of Watchtower kills it in this band, of which Ink Complete is my favorite of their two albums. Ultimate instrumental math metal with no comparison

Orphaned Land – Israeli band featuring loads of unique instruments and sounds from the middle east. Half if English, half in Hebrew, lucky for me I know both haha. Check out the album “Mabool” or the recently released “Never Ending Way of OrWarriOr.” Love this band

Spiral Architect – Only one album but it is a masterpiece. Really complex riffing/timing. Not a big fan of the vocals though

Fates Warning – Surely you’ve heard of them, but they’re often overlooked. “Awaken The Guardian” and “The Spectre Within” are amazing, and John Arch may be my favorite metal vocalist ever.

A few more are Gordian Knot, Ayreon, and Redemption. I could go on but here’s a super awesome link instead

BTW that site is having a tournament style best metal album of all time thing going on. Interesting to say the least

Thanks guys, I’ll be sure to keep em safe. Enrico, I’m in that little known “Central” Jersey just off Exit 8 around Princeton. Everyone outside this area always tells me it’s South, even though it’s smack dab in the center haha.
