Forums Introduce Yourself Long time lurker…

  • Post

    Hi there,

I’ve been on the forum for quite a while, but have never gotten round to posting, so I thought I may as well introduce myself…

My name’s Angus, Tom will know me as I’m taught by him, along with Tom’s ex-tutor Graham Young, on a Sunday at a music school in Leeds. I’m 14 and have been playing since I was 10.

I’m currently into a lot of jazz-fusion, Holdsworth, Guthrie Govan, Greg Howe, Frank Gambale and the like. I’m nowhere near being able to play like them in the slightest, but I’m working on it! I also play a bit of classical music, specifically Bach, along with Kreutzer, Vivaldi, Bartok and some others.

What else…I use a Fender Mexican Strat with Sperzel Locking Tuners, and a Zoom G9.2tt (which I’m looking to replace, I’m not a fan of it really…) I also share Tom and Graham’s use of Perfect 4ths tuning. Oh, and I’m left handed!

I’m contemplating a Premium membership, but for now I thought I’d get to know you all!

    Angus

Hey Angus, welcome to IG! That’s awesome that you’ve taken lessons from Tom. And that’s also really cool how you’re starting out at such a young age. Keep it up man!

Looking forward to having you around. Take care,
    Sean

    Welcome Angus!
At first i reckoned (by your user-name) that you were heavily into AC/DC šŸ˜€
Cool to hear you’ve been taking lessons with Tom, can’t imagine a better tutor
to teach you fusion man =)

    Hi Angus, šŸ™‚

Welcome aboard! šŸ˜‰ Richard Lundmark is correct in that Tom Quayle is what I would consider to be one of the finest teachers of fusion I’ve ever experienced šŸ˜Ž (and I’ve been at this for a very long time my friend! – LOL!) Best of luck with your studies and your journey on this strange instrument we all play!!!

BTW, I think it’s an awesome idea that you’re already into fourths-tuning. I transcribed one of Tom’s improvisations (if you’re interested, search the forum-boards here at Infinite Guitar and look for “Tom Quayle Transcription.”) and after messing around with the fourths-tuning one day (just to see how strange it would seem) I was surprised at how quickly I was getting use to it! That said, I do have about 27 years of standard-tuning contributing to my finger-muscle-memory – (LOL!) (Although I’m fairly handy at Drop-D and I do like playing slide/blues-rock in the open major-tunings: Open-G (or A) and Open-D (or E).

Incidently Angus, you have a very impressive set of influences/guitar-heroes BTW! For what it’s worth, I read an article where Allan Holdsworth claimed that if he were to start playing guitar all over again, he would DEFINITELY start-out in fourths-tuning!!! Imagine that! šŸ˜‰

Best of luck and see you around Angus! šŸ˜Ž
