Intervallic Approach

-Arpeggio - 3 Positions

  • So first we map out the three arpeggio positions in “root position”
    • Position 1 – First Finger
    • Position 2 – Second Finger
    • Position 3 – Third or Forth Finger

-Chord Scale - 3 Positions

  • Now we fill them in with the “upper tensions”– B(9)-D(11)-F#(13)
  • Upper tensions are important to know for scale choice
-Pentatonic Scale – 3 Positions
  • Chord Tones are the same - A(R)-C(b3)-E(5)-G(7)
  • Added Tension D(11)

Now, I hope you can see “why” we get these scale shapes! Now with attentive study, you can use this “formula” to track your way through your scale of choice without getting stuck!
