Tutorial: Melodic Solo

Melodic Solo - Backing Track (136bpm)

  • Tablature

Hey folks!

In this lesson, we're going to learn a short melodic solo taken from a song I wrote recently. Very fun to play. Very melodic. We have a lot of different techniques squeezed into a short amount of time, so go through the solo very slowly as you learn.

First thing let's make note of is the large amount of vibrato used in the solo. See all those wavy lines in the tab? Those markings indicate to use vibrato on the given notes. Make sure your vibrato is at a reasonable tempo, don't spazz out with super tense-sounding vibrato, try to relax as much as possible.

A lot of the notes are transitioned with using legato, lots of slides and hammer-ons in particular. Make sure all your note transitions are silky smooth!

In bar 7, you're going to encounter some sweep picking paired with a fair amount of legato. You're also going to be shifting positions with both of your hands here (you'll be moving your picking hand to tap), so make sure you practice the movements so that no unwanted string noise is present.

In bar 8, you may notice a Petrucci-esque sounding octave run on the G and High E strings. I've always thought this technique is fun to implement into solos as it gives a cool, sexy flavor. Make sure those slides are crystal clear.

Once you think you're ready, head on over to the next page for the backing track!
